Below are answers to common questions about our family dental services.

What does a family dentist do?

A family dentist provides a full range of preventive, restorative, and cosmetic dental care for patients of all ages, from toddlers to seniors. This includes routine services like checkups, cleanings, and oral cancer screenings, as well as treatments such as fillings, crowns, dentures, bridges, and dental implants. Additionally, family dentists may offer cosmetic services to enhance smiles and orthodontic care to correct alignment issues like crowding and bite problems.

During a dental checkup, the dentist first performs a visual exam of your teeth and gums to identify any immediate concerns. You’ll also have the opportunity to discuss any symptoms or questions you may have. A thorough cleaning follows, where plaque, tartar, and surface stains are removed using specialized tools. Your hygienist will also evaluate your gum health and provide personalized advice for improving at-home care, if needed. After the cleaning, your dentist will conduct an in-depth examination of your teeth and gums, perform an oral cancer screening, and review any necessary treatments.

Dental cleanings are recommended every six months to help prevent gum disease, the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. Some patients, particularly those with existing gum conditions, may benefit from more frequent cleanings every 3-4 months to maintain optimal oral health.

Treatment depends on the stage of the disease. Mild gum disease, known as gingivitis, can often be managed with more frequent professional cleanings. In more advanced cases, deeper cleanings called scaling and root planing are needed to remove tartar and bacteria from below the gumline and around the tooth roots.
